Crossbows originated in the Far East. They appear in the historical records of Korea, China, and Japan. These weapons were made for hunting small game such as birds and rabbits. This weapon was usually mounted on a bamboo or wooden stock with a spur to secure it firmly in place, and it was drawn with either a cord or by using an elastic band attached to the bowstring. The earliest weapons appeared during around the 2nd century BC, when they were used by Chinese military forces against enemy archers at sea.
